I was recently asked.

How much do you want to raise for your kickstarter project?

I replied, it is not just the money I am looking for with this campaign.

But Arthur is it not about getting money so that you can complete your project? My friend asked.

This project is not about the money as much as it is about the supporters. I responded.

I do not understand, my friend was puzzled and frustrated because he was certain that I was being facetious. 

Not wanting to lose a supporter, I explained my position.

I want a best seller, the more people that I get involved with my book, means its popularity will grow. I spoke with excitement at the prospect of not only selling thousands of copies of my novel, but the mere prospect of reaching the popularity of a Novel that is destined to be a movie, intrigue me greatly.

Some time had passed with me ramble on and on, I am not sure how long, my friend nudged me. Snap out of it, you are not there yet. He asked another question. So, how many supporters would you like to get?

That was an easy question, because that's the number I had when I decided to take the crowdfunding route. However, I paused, because I had not made that number known anywhere in my blog or on my kickstarter.com project.

Are you going to tell me. He spoke with an impatient tone.

1 million supporters

I know you are thinking, that is just impossible. I too think it is impossible.

Imagine you have been called into the office of the president of Ginormous Inc. The president of this company need your help drafting public relations campaign to show the softer side of his company. His company has been suffering from some pretty bad PR lately. You are known for your skills in rallying the people to a cause, really you have charisma, overall people are attracted to you. The president slides a blank check across the table, and tells you to fill in any number you want. You have just been given a Blank Check.

This is one of the benefits you get from crowdfunding, but it is a small benefit compared to the big picture.

Crowdfunding is not just a Blank Check, crowdfunding is the best way to build a network. These wonderful people that have rallied behind your project. They can provide valuable input, about your project, providing a focus group, and support to push your idea to the next level.

For me they will become critics, editors, publishers, publicity agents, providing me with valuable feedback that normally you would only get by spending thousands of dollars.

These people are supporters who could make my book a best seller.
